Exploring Categorical Structuralism
نویسنده
چکیده
Some issues for categorical foundations for mathematics are explored.Among them: how categorical foundations assert the existence of their objectsand arrows, and how categorical set theory motivates its own axiom scheme ofreplacement. Two interpretations of ZF into categorical set theory are explicitlycompared. One is homophonic but partial; the other is total and uses membershiptrees.

An Epistemic Structuralist Account
ii This thesis aims to explain the nature and justification of mathematical knowledge using an epistemic version of mathematical structuralism, that is a hybrid of Aristotelian structuralism and Hellman’s modal structuralism. Structuralism, the theory that mathematical entities are recurring structures or patterns, has become an increasingly prominent theory of mathematical ontology in the late...
متن کاملClassical and Quantum Structuralism *
In recent work, symmetric dagger-monoidal (SDM) categories have emerged as a convenient categorical formalization of quantum mechanics. The objects represent physical systems, the morphisms physical operations, whereas the tensors describe composite systems. Classical data turn out to correspond to Frobenius algebras with some additional properties. They express the distinguishing capabilities ...
متن کاملStructuralism, post-structuralism, and the library: de Saussure and Foucault
Purpose – Explores the relevance of structuralism and post-structuralism to the field of library and information science (LIS). Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a literature-based conceptual analysis of the two philosophical movements, structuralism and post-structuralism, as represented by the seminal figures of Ferdinand de Saussure and Michel Foucault. Findings – The principles of ...
متن کاملStructural realism versus deployment realism: A comparative evaluation.
In this paper I challenge and adjudicate between the two positions that have come to prominence in the scientific realism debate: deployment realism and structural realism. I discuss a set of cases from the history of celestial mechanics, including some of the most important successes in the history of science. To the surprise of the deployment realist, these are novel predictive successes towa...
متن کاملRussell’s Absolutism vs.(?) Structuralism
Along with Frege, Russell maintained an absolutist stance regarding the subject matter of mathematics, revealed rather than imposed, or proposed, by logical analysis. The Fregean definition of cardinal number, for example, is viewed as (essentially) correct, not merely adequate for mathematics. And Dedekind’s “structuralist” views come in for criticism in the Principles. But, on reflection, Rus...
